This is a really good pressing, even though it's on one disc. PLUS, the custom label is very cool looking.

Far from everyone's taste, particularly if they were part of the jaded detractors whose interest in Bruce Springsteen waned when he mainstreamed his brand of raw Americana roots rock, pop-inflected rock overwhelmed the charts in the mid-to-late 1980s. Def Leppard pioneered this polished, hook-laden, compressed style of stereophonic metal with their third album "Pyromania" in 1983. Aided once again by producer extraordinaire Mutt Lange, the band reconvened for their fourth effort, the similarly titled "Hysteria", but the recording process was plagued with setbacks from the outset that were thankfully overcome. Percussionist Rick Allen lost an arm, leading him to adapt an electronic kit into his arsenal, which only saw him become even more inventive with his drumming skills. It is this thundering mechanical drum sound and punctuating guitars that dominate the mix, with the vocals and layered production effects perhaps less pronounced but still surrounding the rhythmic elements of the instrumentation, thus creating a luxuriating and enveloping soundstage so cavernous and spatial that the stereo imaging becomes cognate with the recording. "Hysteria" is the band's most self-assured and accomplished record, elaborate and sinuous to such an extent that each song undulates with different sonic surfaces and structures, seamlessly flowing into its successor, causing the album to immediately register as homogeneous, but satisfyingly so. Lyrically, though, it is clear that each song is wholly singular in its subject matter, written from Joe Elliott's man on the street perspective, conversely paying tribute to his glam rock heroes on "Rocket" before questioning the point of nuclear weaponry on "Gods of War". Even if there is no thematic link between the tracks, the album is amazingly consistent, never losing its slickness and pacing despite the sixty-minute duration, which is primarily owing to Mutt Lange's painstaking meticulousness with regards to the intricately detailed sonic density present and the band's sense of craft and sapient pop songwriting ability. "Hysteria" was calculatedly mechanical and anthemic, appealing to pop and rock fans as well as achieving crossover chart success; the album boasts seven singles among its twelve tracks, which attests to the scale of the band's international popularity. Despite its rich, substantial production and lyrical frivolity, the record is a masterpiece, arguably the band's most immediately memorable, energetic, engaging and melodious. It is one of the few rock albums that has retained its classic status, possibly due to its inexplicably timeless quality and sonic lushness in direct contrast to other albums of the time.Rating: Indispensable

Hey, just saw one on ebay today, can’t validate, but the seller saying 250 copies

Just opened mine to find out one of the labels was from some other release....the orange vinyl is very cool and everything else is perfect. It's the side that has Gods of War, Don't Shoot Shotgun and Run Riot. The label says Parlophone and are labeled to be songs by Paul Weller? Interesting...
Anayajurus
Terrific pressing. This album really benefits from being spread onto two discs. Plenty of ooomph right across the range. I also have the original UK pressing, and this is a far superior sounding edition
Drelahuginn
Another missed opportunity by the record company. Everybody knows that factory pressed cds can go above 80mins these days, just take the rest of New Order or both discs of So80s presents Alphaville as examples, so why did they not put the In The Round show on 1 disc & give us the dvd of said concert as the 3rd disc? Tsk tsk morons :)
Qwert
Somebody know how many copies are made of this version?
Ueledavi
Am very interested in finding out also. I have 2 of these. I do know they were presented to the vips at the melbourne show and were not aavailable in stores. I cant imagine many blues being made. I know theres 500 made of the orange. Id say the blues very limited and would be super rare.

This is the only info i have on this edition..http://www.deflepparduk.com/hysteria30vinyl3.html

I can't find any information on this. I am under the impression it was only available as part of the Australian VIP tour as a present. Do you know anything else on it?

I have a Quiex translucent brown Pressing. Is it listed here? Can't see it. Sounds stunning.

Record sounds really great imo. I do not have an original vinyl to compare to, but i had this on cassette a while ago.

If you ask me, yes, Hysteria is indeed one of the best Rock records of the 80's.Why? Not only due to the sheer professionalism displayed by these guys but also the unbelievable catchiness of the whole record. There are less songs here that weren't blockbuster hits than songs that weren't and this tells us something. It all sounds so easy to listen and even to play but if you dig deep into the massive layers of production you'll realize that something like this is not easy at all to concieve.Few Rock records had this kind of impact in the 80's and in the midst of a growing hunger for heavier and heavier music among the Rock community, former NWOBHM darlings put out a Pop Metal bomb more polished than anything by Madonna or Duran Duran. Bold move to make if they wanted to keep their street cred, genius move to make if they wanted to generate an everlasting impact in the showbiz.I must say, though, in some aspects the production is too much and the spontaneous playing of Collen is swallowed by the effects. I think that in that sense the best Def Leppard record is Pyromania, it is equally catchy and does not sound as worked as Hysteria.I have seen the documentary now and I realize exactly why I have this opinion.Still, a very good record and who can forget tracks like Pour Some Sugar On Me, Love Bites or Hysteria? Radio staples that still get their dosage of airplay every now and then.
Iseared
One of my favorite metal albums of the 80s. Probably my favorite period. My favorite track is Animal and even the video was fun to watch when it was plastered all over MTV. Second favorite is the title track Hysteria. Hysteria the track is more of an easy listening metal track then a real full on metal track. It reeks of 1980s mall music. It's a favorite and I even like the similar track that Iron Maiden did called "Somewhere in Time". Its hard to sum up this album but my favorite memories of this was when I would listen to this album on the way to vacation in Wild Wood NJ which was an obscure amusement ride mecca. To this day I really enjoy this album and the DVD called "In the round" is a great way to visually enjoy this album (the modern Blu-Ray concert is annoying with all of the video screens).

This doesn't look like a microcassette in the image..? What part about should be edited?

""CD 4&5 - The audio version of the 1989 concert film, Live: In the Round, In Your Face, recorded during the U.S. Hysteria tour. First time released on CD.""But yet the back of the cover says it's from a 1988 concert in Denver
Andromakus
It was released in 1989 but it was recorded in 1988.
Delirium
Hysteria = Kraft. It’s the cheesiest! Make no mistake, side one is ultimate greatness. Just like that first taste of hot piping mac n’ cheese. But just like anything, you end up eating the entire box and you get the side twos and start feeling uncomfortable and bloated. Side two is all filler and leaves you regretting what just happened and you make that promise not to do it again, at least for a couple weeks. Those sneaky blokes snuck the title track on side two to release the trapped gas and for that i thank them kindly.
Trash Obsession
A beautiful piece of art both sonically and visually, must have for any Leppard fan.
Dodo
I expected better. It's not the worst pressing, but whoever pressed it could've taken more advantage on the overall sound quality of this reissue. Sounds muddy and the dynamics could've been better. I would still recommend this over the original, but don't expect it to sound amazing!
Black_Hawk_Down.
Does anyone know how many of these were pressed? I keep seeing ONLY 500 MADE on eBay, but it seems I've seen at least 500 for sale, so that can't be right. :)
Bumand
When records are pressed they never know beforehand the exact number of records they will get right.( No Warps or other problems) They definately had enough Orange vinyl ready to press and cool Down to amount to several thousand of records. Much cheaper to make too many than to have to start over again. Limited edition is mainly a sales gimmick, but still. If you want this record you should have pre-ordered it. As this year passes there will not be many on the market at a decent price. 1000 Orange on the worldwide market and another 500 in the hands of the band/record company to give away in fitting situations. The thing that is kind of crappy about Limited is that they can do the same thing NeXT year. Limited edition of blue vinyl hysteria! Only 500 copies and so on. I have the record but if I bought every Limited edition record I might want that would empty my million dollar account in a year.
Elildelm
prices have gone crazy on the original 1987 LP 11€ for a vg+/vg that sold for millions? fuck it
Froststalker
Huge disappointment. Mastering is incredibly loud. Highs are quite harsh and the bottom end is completely lacking. Sound is muddy overall. I suspect the master used for the vinyl may have been the same as the CD version of this reissue, which is rated as a DR7 on the Dynamic Range Database. For such a perfectly produced record, a good dynamic remaster from the original tapes could have been fantastic had they been handed over to someone like Chris Bellman, Kevin Gray, Bernie Grundman, or Steve Hoffman. The pressing itself is nice - dead quiet, flat vinyl, and the packaging is very nice and high quality. Too bad this much care wasn't put into the sound!
Ranicengi
Definitely needs a better turntable, cartridge, etc. This remaster is nearly flawless. Dynamic, detailed midrange, punchy lows, and the highs are very detailed, but also rounded off a bit, which keeps them from being too harsh. Unless you don't understand the terms muddy and harsh, as it relates to music, I just don't see how anyone, with a good system, could come to this conclusion. To each their own I guess.
Falya
Trust me, nothing wrong with my stereo. This remaster sounds like utter garbage.
Moswyn
You need some new ears or a better stereo lol
Kanal
Couldn't disagree more. Sound is superior to original 87 pressing. Did side by side comparisons multiple times this last week with a friend. New pressing is the best I've heard the album.
TheFresh
I waited several years for this album to be released after my favorite album pyromania blew me away and made me a devoted def lepprd fan at 11 years of age. I stuck With them and read all the information I could find in the rock Magazines in he mid 80s. When I bought the Lp the day it came out in august 87, 63 minutes of Music was crammed on to one Lp. This was a sad detail in an otherwise fantastic gift from the heaven. A release of this magnitude With such expectations deserved a better fate than cramming 63 minutes of rock n roll on one Lp. It was the cd era. 90% of the labums was to be bought on cd, so I Guess the record company took a set of blind eyes towards those still consumed by vinyl. Now in 2017 hysteria is finally released as it should have been in 87, on 2Lps. I had heard some not so flattering reviews so I put the first record on expecting to not hear anything different, but BAM! It is louder and prouder in the smooth vinyl way. This 2Lp set sounds great! Very very satisfied With killer crisp sounds I have never heard before. Details here and there makes it sound remixed! so fine!!! 30 years I have waited for this. Like getting hysteria the way it should have been for the first time 30 years too late.
Honeirsil
I have not heard this version, but I seriously doubt anyone could remaster this 63 minute beast on 1 LP better than the original by Bob Ludwig. Either way, to fit 30 minutes a side on 1 LP any mastering engineer is going to need to sacrifice volume or bass, maybe both. Just turn it up.
Xtintisha
I was very interested to hear this 30th anniversary re-issue as I know this album intimately (I was 11 in 1987 and at the time this was the coolest thing I'd ever heard!). Having listened to it I'm pretty happy. The SQ is nice and the packaging is superb. I haven't blind tested it against my NZ original as a comparison as yet, but I think the "new" version will stand up pretty well. I've had a bad run with reissues of late, with some being almost unlistenable in my opinion, so it's a nice change to actually enjoy an update for a change!
Alsanadar
It sounds amazing. The music really breathed spread over two LPs
GoodLike
great sounding and great looking release in a gatefold sleeve. not worth the price flippers are asking so if you didn't get a copy stick with the black vinyl reissue
Wetiwavas
I fear that this edition has succumbed to the dreadful "loudness war" of raising the EQ's and compressing the sound causing you to lose the original mix in the process. This "Remastered Edition" sounds louder, but no better in my opinion. After going back and listening to my UK pressing, I feel that this is a tad inferior in sound quality. The orange vinyl is a nice touch and the packaging is of good quality. I think it would have been helpful if detailed production credits on this particular release would have been included also. In short, unless you don't have a copy of Hysteria already, save your $$$.
Jack
what happened to the rock of ages documentry that was supposed to be on the dvd?
Chuynopana
I believe it was a rights issue and they were unable to include it, which is a shame because that documentary needs a proper release instead of all the low-quality versions floating around on Youtube and other sites.
Vuzahn
How does this version sound? I'm tempted to get this.
Moonworm
Its amazing, ignore flogs like alexk you clearly have bog in the ears.
Glei
It's pretty bad. It's mastered incredibly loud. (Right before spinning this, I was playing the Cream 'Royal Albert Hall 2005' LP set, which is beautifully mastered, and when I dropped the needle on this it was so loud it completely startled me, despite not touching the volume knob at all after that prior album.) The high end is really harsh, and the low end is completely lacking. It sounds muddy overall. I was really disappointed. For such an impeccably produced album, it deserves better. The entry for the CD version of this on the DR Database has it as a DR7, and I wouldn't be completely shocked if that exact same master was used for this vinyl. Big missed opportunity here.
Fegelv
I'm gonna disagree with benchox, sorry. The soundstage of the pressing is fantastic. The album was heavily produced when it was originally recorded to begin with. This pressing is teh first time I've been able to actually pick out individual instruments while listening. I highly recommend it.
Rocky Basilisk
it doesn't sound bad but it's not what I was expecting, it's definitely from a digital source!!!

I found the sticker funny as simply vinyl issued this as a dbl vinyl in 1999
Faezahn
The Simply Vinyl pressing of 'Hysteria' sounds pretty good to me.
Quttaro
True. But some of Simply Vinyl's pressings were not very good.

But it wasn't an official release from the Bludgeon Riffola label right?

Yes, many Discogs fourm readers want to know who did the mastering duties, pressing plant and matrix deadwax information. Pls. post ASAP since Def Leppard albums were a memorable part of our childhoods! Hysteria's 30th anniversary LP edition could be a must buy...

Thanks for the enlightening info. I was able to buy the Super Deluxe and 2LP anniversary editions!

"This 30th anniversary Super Deluxe Edition has been prepared in conjunction with singer Joe Elliott who has acted as executive producer on the set, the mastering has been done by the band’s long-serving sound engineer Ronan McHugh."Source: http://www.deflepparduk.com/2017newsjun75.html

Thanks, man, late or not you were helpful. Regards

Sorry for late answer. When it comes to simply vinyl issues they are dead silent and sounds fantastic. Highly recommended! Simply vinyl issue of Hysteria is the first double edition ever, remastered or not.

It possibly means REMASTERED double Vinyl for the 1st time

I got my copy yesterday, the LPs sound decent, although i personally prefer my original 87 press (just checked them as i saw your comment). Sounds a bit more balanced to my ears. (could be the pressing plants, because i got the EU version though.)

Ok, any idea of how this pressing sounds? I ordered my copy from Amazon and should be here tomorrow.

There is a 1977 release but it isn't listed here.
Dog_Uoll
It's probably not listed because Hysteria was released in 1987.

Arador
The sound quality is a bit off, but other than that it's perfect.
Contancia
My copy matches this pressing, and is dark translucent brown when held up to light. Are all copies like this?
GoodBuyMyFriends
I have this version too? Are they rare? Valuable. Thanks for the information .

Nope. You have a promo copy. Promo's to radio were audiophile pressings. Mercury, Polydor, Chrysalis and A&M were pressing selected title LP promos for radio on pure vinyl from about 1987-1989, since most stations had made the transition to CD's. My assumption is that for the handful that were still using turntables, may as well give them the best possible audio with no surface noise. (The length of the LP was also probably a factor). I was in radio from 1969-2010. We still had turntables (along with CD players) in our studio when this came out and I always opted for the vinyl version of this album when 'I' was on the air, because the early CD copies of this sounded mighty thin.

A nice pressing of a classic album. Side 1 reads like a Greatest Hits!

I think it's time for someone to respond to this silly post. Anyone who gives this one star obviously has ulterior motives other than honestly reviewing an LP. This is not the most dynamic record I own but at the same time it's far from inferior. Yeah, you my have to crank it up a little more but so what! I have a pair of audiophile Sennheiser headphones and it sounds pretty damn good to me! I actually hesitated because of this lame review but finally took the plunge and I'm glad I did! Also, if it was that bad, where are all the copies for sale? You would think they'd be giving them away..I waited years to nab one of these. One of the reasons there are still a few unopened copies could be because it came out the same year as The Great Recession started.

is not my post to be silly but maybe my ears.... or yours? i don't know. what kind of other reasons should i have to give it one star? personal interests, but for what? i am not a seller! this vinyl is crap and after this i've bought a first dutch pressing and i can ensure you is day to night. This reissue is so poor, no bass range and the volume so low. plus the vinyl compound is noisy and the quality of it is terrible. copies for sale? yes i am astonished to see there is just a copy to be saled at 70 euros, but it was done in 2008 after all and vinyl return was just starting and, moreover, this i think is the only reissue made in the last years, or so. i really do not like this pressing and i'll always confirm my one "silly star" :) cheers.

I find know the old vinyl vs cd argument, but I personally find the vinyl has a very nice sound indeed.
Folsa
Fantastiskt good record. Sound is great with clear sound and great bass. Sounds as good as "Pyromania". Happy i saved this record from The 80's.
Doktilar
I listen to everything and i love everyting about music But the old Def Leppard is so good that i am always happy when i put in on my record player.
Hulis
another disaster made in GZ. after about 6 playbacks in this years this record seems to be worn. vinyl is poor and noisy. plus the volum is so so so low. seems they forgot the riia conversion. this label almoust use CD as a source. it's a nonsense. and those are the results. a crap vinyl that i bet is so faraway from the first print. for shame universal, for shame.
Landaron
Brilliant album, and just incredible sounding on vinyl! Specifically the UK pressing with "MASTERDISK" in the runout.

I would love to be able to say that the music of my high school days that defined my school, friends and life was R.E.M., The Cure, or The Smiths but if I did I would be being dishonest and I really don’t feel like being a poser. No, in my small town where I lived until my 11th grade year of High School if you were not into Hank Williams J.R. then you were listening to Hair Metal bands like Poison, Motley Crue and Def Leppard. I would not get into those other bands until my Senior Year when I moved. Personally I am proud to say I did not find these bands as satisfying as some other music I was listening to in the privacy of my home such as early Genesis with Peter Gabriel. But I had this stupid desire to fit in and so I went to hair metal band shows, and would buy and wear the t-shirt from the concert the next day to school to validate my coolness that “hey I was at the show.” For the most part I don’t really care for this style of music like a use to. I may occasionally bellow out “Home Sweet Home” by Motley Crue during a karaoke night for fun but I’m not at home reflecting on this music or buying the vinyl copies of these albums, except one group. I did honestly love Def Leppard. I felt they had a bit more to them than just being a band that played to get chicks and makes some cash. So I do have an affection for Def Leppard from that time, albums like High n Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria I do like having on vinyl. I do have one issue with these albums, actually I have issues with one album and that’s Hysteria. Hysteria is their most successful album, infact, I think besides AC/DC’s Back In Black it’s one of the most successful Heavy Metal albums ever made. This is primary credited to their producer John “Mutt” Lang. Mutt Lang gave them their glossy and harmonious sound that defined them and made them more radio friendly. This has been a double edge sword in my opinion. Since Mutt Lang moved on to produce successful albums by his wife Shania Twain, I noticed the similarities between Def Leopard’s songs and songs he would produce for Shania Twain. People may think I’m crazy but just listen to Shania’s song “Any Man of Mine” and then listen to “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and tell me you can’t hear it or “If Your Not In Love (I’m Outta Here) and “Armageddon It” no they are not remakes but you can hear the style similarities. Hysteria has dated a bit and to me now sounds overproduced and too glossy. I would love to hear someone remix and remaster the album in a more stripped down version removing the tons of layers of overdubs and sound effects. Under all that 80’s gloss I am convinced there is an excellent album to be excavated from it’s 80’s debris.

I too listened to hard rock, hair metal in the 80s. I loved High & Dry and Pyromania but was turned off by Hysteria. It was too pop for my taste. I was also listening to Tesla, Ratt, and Dokken. The end of my metal days wrapped up with Queensryche's Empire and I took a 90 degree turn to Alice In Chains and lots of British guitar oriented alternative rock... Swervedriver, The Catherine Wheel, etc. The benefit is that I got to go back and discover all the 80s post-punk and alternative bands that I missed because I wasn't exposed to it either. Bands that would go on to influence bands I love today. (The Chameleons UK -> Interpol for example)
Just_paw
My tastes evolved from hair metal and Top 40 acts, too, but I still stick with Def Leppard's 80s output. Being British probably made them less cheesy than their American peers.
Geny
I actually heard a remix of Any Man of Mine and Pour Some Sugar On Me. It was played in a country radio station and was apparently done by Uncle Wynn. This was in Seattle. Wish I had a copy of it as it was really good!
DART-SKRIMER
This is classic 80s rock and even if you don't like bands poorly named after animals with hearing problems, the guitar work, effects, vocals and drumming are awesome.
