Esben & the Witch radically reframed their music on A New Nature, stripping their sound to a sinewy minimalism and expanding their songs with newfound confidence. Its starkness felt necessary, and though the band brings more color and atmosphere to Older Terrors, that spirit of bold reinvention continues. Recorded in their adopted hometown of Berlin, their fourth album consists of four epic-length songs. While many acts don't even attempt songs over ten minutes, Esben & the Witch are in their element when they go long. Marching Song Esben and the Witch song. I'm a big fan of the majority of Steve Albini's work as a sound engineer, but I've gotta admit it doesn't really shine through on this album. The music is brilliant and, for me, is some of Esben and the Witch's best work, but the overall production just doesn't sound right to me. I know Albini is renowned for his 'less is more' ethic and I for one hate the over-produced plasticness of a lot of records these days, but it just feels like they recorded the album and completely skipped the post-production stage... For example, listen to the original recording of No Dog on the split release with Thought Forms and compare it to the version on this album - the original mix sounds cohesive and retains the energy and atmosphere of the song, whereas Rachel's vocals seem too dry and distanced from the rest of the mix, and the instruments just don't cut through in Albini's cut.
Fair enough. To be honest, it's been a while since I've given this album a listen, so maybe I need to revisit it and see if I still feel the same. Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting that EATW would have benefited from a cleaner, more polished production, just that I felt the production sounded rushed, and the that the mix was a bit disjointed. That being said, I have recently compared both versions of No Dog, and I still feel the same way about that song - I think it's just mainly the vocals in the quieter section on Albini's mix sound far too dry and separated from the rest of the instruments, you can really tell that she's not in the same room as the rest of the band, it's really off-putting. The rest of the instrumentation probably does sound punchier and better balanced on Albini's mix though...
Hi, I am on the same boat as you - I hate overproduced albums. But I have to disagree on Albini's work here, I think it just sounds as raw as EATW wanted to sound. And with the perspective of time, with Older Terrors already released, I feel reaffirmed on this idea. EATW seem to pursue a raw sound without any tricks. And I also prefer No Dog in ANN rather than in the EP...
