Album

Box is the second boxed set released by Wolfgang Voigt under his Gas alias. The album collects the compact disc versions of Zauberberg, Königsforst , Pop and Oktember. The album marked Voigt's return to the Gas project, with a new album, Narkopop, seeing release the year after Box. The boxed set consisted of 10 vinyl records 3 per album, 1 for Oktember as well as 4 compact discs and an art book. As Box now posits, GAS begins two years on with 1997s Zauberberg. Its the first instance of Voigt presenting GAS as a unified sound and vision. Theres a blurred photo of black trees bathed in a demonic red light on the cover, as if a forest fire blazes just out of frame, and the music itself reveals-and revels in-a far more somber tone. Box both cements Voigts legacy yet it also threatens to overshadow it, collecting and solidifying a haunting body of work that echoes not just through techno, but all music as the 20th century came to its end. No other project of Voigts created quite as much of an obsession amongst its listeners. Box Gas album. Box contains some differences between its contents and the previously issued versions of each album. Apart from overall remastering of the music, several songs appear in slightly longer versions. As a child I didn't go to the kindergarten because I felt disturbed by all the noise of other children, he told Dr. Chris Dooks in a 2015 interview. It was the same later in school. The fault is in the social constructs, like school and work, which weren't made to support such uncontrollable or nonconformist dispositions. Apart from that, Voigt explained, after school in the afternoon, everything was fine when I could dive into my childhood fantasy world. No wonder he started Gas. Forest retreats have inspired everyone from Bon Iver to Biosphere. For Voigt, they were therapeutic. Listen free to Gas Box Zauberberg 1, Zauberberg 2 and more. 24 tracks 251:34

Performer

Gas stylized as GAS or G A S is the main musical project of German electronic musician and composer Wolfgang Voigt born 1961. The project was created as an expressive medium inspired by his experiences with taking LSD in the Königsforst, a German forest situated near his hometown of Cologne, for long periods in his youth. He has claimed that the intention of the project is to bring the forest to the disco, or vice-versa. Watch as bassist Pete Griffin explores the American Performer Jazz Bass. Anyone have the outer box only that they are willing to sell?
Kesalard
When I asked about getting a replacement for my poorly pressed copy of Königforst from the Box, Kompakt let me know individual releases of the 3xLP albums will be coming next year.

I'm still waiting! . . . . . . .

Does anyone else's Box smell a bit funny? Or is it just me?

Wonderful experience hearing these on vinyl - depth of sound is amazing. Aside from a couple of loud (unintentional) pops on Oktember it all sounds clean and open. Packaging is okay - Good, sturdy, attractive box. The art book is a bit of a let down unfortunately and I would agree that - despite being nicely bound and well presented - the art work itself is nothing special with the images appearing to be rendered using a basic watercolour/impressionistic Photoshop filter. It would have been better to have had something more akin to the music - in fact the original photographs would have been an improvement, with perhaps some subtle layers/digital manipulation - a mixture of hand rendered and digital. With regards to sleeves: I changed mine to poly-lined option as I was concerned that the vinyl would get scuffed using those supplied (not great) In summary: Recommended despite flaws - for the quality of sounds alone. 9/10 for pressing quality, 7/10 for packaging etc.

Hearing these albums on vinyl, cranked up on headphones, reveals so much I’ve never heard. Unreal. 10/10

Now I've had the proper time to absorb these albums I can say that it's a 10/10 for me. Not saying much as I already have a 10/10 for the originals. But, after numerous listens the Gas Box offers new sometimes hidden moments to classic tracks heard hundreds of times. Just sublime beautiful music. About the packaging: the box itself is ok. Heavy cardboard covered in a texture (tho, it's easy to get dirty). The album sleeves are ok. I have the originals and have compared them. I assume since it's been years since they came out the originals are of lower quality. Hence some of the "photoshop blurring". Understandable. The black inner sleeves are pretty lame. They easily attract finger prints and look cheep. They should have just used professional black sleeves with poly lining. The label stickers are also lame. They should have A, B, C etc...on them like Narkopop and they should be in color! Kompakt saving a buck in the end. The "art" book had potential but utterly fails. The book looks cheap and the photos are so filtered with that boring photoshop crap it's old after page one. The Pop Ambinet covers are a million times better and they aren't that cool. Over all I'm happy to have. I don't play the originals anymore and now have a complete set with longer takes. Music: A+. Art: C

Both sound great, just did a side by side. I'm using a Ortofon Archiv stylus and Yamaha monitors. Low end is excellent on both. High end seems alittle clearer to me on Gas Box. Hard to completely tell. Also, the track arrangements are different as well as the edits. For example, on Konigs the tracks are called Untitled and on Gas Box they are called Konigs 1 - etc...Seems to me that if you can find copies / afford it, I would get both.
Steelrunner
Thanks for your review of the package.Someone stated that the sound quality of "Köningsfort" was lower here than on the original pressing. Any opinion about that?
Yar
I avoided buying this for a long time because I have Nah und Fern and have listened to these albums on cd countless times. The sound is astonishing and I'm thrilled to have the full-length edits. A few minor issues: I don't like the flimsy magazine paper sleeves and the art book has kind of a photoshop-filter look that I'm not crazy about (the Narkopop art is better). This is timeless music that fully lives up to its reputation.

...pheew!! :P I bought this as a preorder and received it at release date but haven't had time to open it until this morning, Ascension Day 2017, half a year later.I'm relieved to find that all vinyls appear to be in "perfect order", no finger prints, just unaudible paper scuff on one side that doesn't affect play at all. Sad to hear that others got damaged goods.Sadly, I've had the same experience with quite many of brand new records, DEEP scratches, finger prints, examples The The - Soul Mining (also a box!), Goldfrapp - Silver Eye (clear vinyl).I've returned them all and have received replacement copies that were OK. I can't remember any malconducts like this in the good old pre-CD days...?Wonder what the ratio is in this GAS box, as many are so disappointed.
Kison
A word on the artwork of the box set individual sleeves. Are the sleeves intended to have that 'blur' effect on both the background image but also on the text for example 'Konigsforst' title on the reverse of the individual sleeve is slightly out of focus compared to the clearer white text at the bottom of the sleeve and same for the rest of them. Even the embossed titles on all the sleeves seems blurry? Is this how they are on the originals and how they are intended to look?
Gravelblade
I contacted kompakt about this and they state it's intended by the artist.
Yayrel
Any plans to release these 3LP editions separately? The lacquers / metal work are there, just please press them anywhere other than MPO, I suggest Record Industry or Pallas.
spacebreeze
I got the first batch direct from Kompakt and they were all clean.
Cordalas
Got the Feb repress. No finger marks or anything like that, everything mint. It's a beautiful release. I even like the artwork book, nice touch. If I had to nitpick I'd say I didn't like the black sleeves the records are in, but overall I love it.
Painwind
I actually spoke too soon. My copy of Zauberbeg was dirty and had fingerprints all over it. Thought I'd checked it but obviously not :(Still though, I don't think it's enough to not own this if you'r a fan.
Rigiot
Any word on the quality control of the second press? Seems like the first run was a mixed bag of fine and not-so-fine copies. Any real differences between the first and second run? Any issues with the second run to date?
Akta
I didn't buy first time around as felt it was too expensive, perhaps this ended up being lucky given reported issues. When I noticed there was a new batch released I decided to stump up given elevated prices for previous set once it had sold out, just received today. All the vinyl looks nice and clean, no issues with fingerprints or other residues as others reported. A few of the inner sleeves have splits which is mildly irritating given it is brand new but a minor issue.
Monn
The first batch seemed to have random problems, so I'm not sure if my word can be of any proof for all the second batch, but anyway : I bought the February repress, listened to the whole lot, and it's absolutely perfect (the records are clean, silent, and the music sounds fantastic). All in all a great release (except for the book which is ugly and useless, but of no consequence on what's really important : the music).
Fesho

Same. Very disappointed. The box's shape is basically cheap. The "art book" is just for the name: it looks like "holiday-book-printed-edition". The photos are filtered with a ugly photoshop filter (pixels are bubbles). About the vinyls: a lot of my vinyls had fingerprints and scratches. Inner sleeves are scarred. I just can't understand. But it's still GAS, so ... :)Schade Kompakt. Does anybody know quality of others Kompakt (re-) editions?cheers
Murn
My copy of this box set (bought new through the Vinyl Me Please store) only has the vinyl - no CDs. Does everyone else have combined vinyl/CDs? I only wanted vinyl to be clear. Maybe this release should be edited if there are two versions.
Gold Crown
LOL - yes you're right. Never opened the book (until just now - 2 years after I made this comment)
Nalme
The CDs are in the back of the book, pretty sure there is only one version of this box, so if they're not in yours I'd write the company you bought it from or the label.
Twentyfirstfinger
Just got my copy from the Kompakt shop. Happy with it but disappointed by the inner sleeves and the records inner cases. Too flimsy and feel a bit "cheap".
Arcanescar
Love my copy; missed out on the initial batch for sale @ Kompakt, but got one for $130 just in time for the holidays. Sounds way better than the mp3's I downloaded from Audiogalaxy back in the day...
Porgisk
Just picked up a copy at Amoeba in Hollywood and they had at least 3 more copies left on the shelf...
Uyehuguita
Don't buy overpriced copies now, it's still available from the label at this moment, and will be re-pressed in Feb 2017.
Neol
Repress will come up in February 2017. Maybe the quality issues won't occur on this one?
Nahelm
Sorry if you didn't get the pun. I'm french, by the way.And I've got a copy of the first press. The box, book, sleeves and records are perfect. I also don't understand the complains about the book. It is pretty and an invitation to a journey into a mysterious forest.
Fani
"If can imagine some french workers spoiling the job on purpose..." - What a ridiculous comment.
Yozshugore
Saying that MPO is "the cause of the issues" is not fair. Sometimes their pressings and packagings are great (Aphex "Cheetah EP", ERP "New Road"...), sometimes not (see the complains on their Discogs page). But just because it comes from MPO doesn't mean the pressing/packaging will suck. Perhaps it would have been better not to choose a french plant for a german boxset though. If can imagine some french workers spoiling the job on purpose... ;-)
Kezan
The choice of plant was the cause of the issues (MPO, France). If it's a repress then it'll be the same situation as before. Not that my copy had any problems though, it's pot luck.
Dikus
Purloined letter: there are still copies left at... the Kompakt webstore. Cheaper than here.
Binar
I just opened my copy and boy am I so disappointed. I just opened a paypal case and just want to return the entire box set. most of the records have finger prints all over them, a couple have bad scratches. Not worth keeping.
Mr.Champions
Ordered this from Amazon in October, but seems they didn't have any copies to ship?
Rarranere
seems more copies are going up from Kompakt now, so should be able to pick up a copy from somewhere else, though may be in the new year. Phonica are listing it now as a pre-order.
Anayalore
Pre-ordered from Amazon UK for a stupidly low price, like £83 on October 21st. Item was never delivered and I'm sure it won't be because of the low price I paid. I think if they make a severe price error, they don't cancel it, but they don't exactly make sure you get it either.
skyjettttt
Pre-ordered from amazon uk on 31 Aug on finally arrived last Sunday. Never listed as in stock but they sent it from Italy (from tracking). Got it for £101 but after a months delay and sold out everywhere else - I thought I would never get it
Via
Königsforst, Pop & Oktember all sounded great, but Zauberberg had noticeable pops and clicks. Still a great box (though the book is a unnecessary mood setter).
Maridor
The pops and clicks in Zauberberg are part of the recording-- it threw me off at first too. Check for yourself against the CD.
MisTereO
I have read with interest the comments below.i myself have not yet played any of the box set,but I would wholeheartedly agree that the book is somewhat lazy and pointless. If I find any scuffs or fingerprints on the vinyl I will be really p**sed off.I fear what we are seeing here is the ever increasing trend of cutting corners and general negligence on the part of modern businesses.they have employees who don't give a shit about their performance because they have no incentive to make an effort.understandable in the food industry and supermarkets but music is supposed to be about the art.if we are losing even this then I weep for the future.I should say, however, that there are still many artists and labels out there doing fantastic work.lets hope those who are lacking decide to follow their example.
Rolling Flipper
I respect your opinion and it's validity.just thought the book was a bit lazy.if we're going to pay £120 for something perhaps the book should be a bit more varied and not just the same picture of blurred forest at different angles.
Larosa
Odd rant considering Wolfang Voigt and his label are exactly the kind of artist/business we would all be lucky to have more of. If there were some QA/QC issues with part of the run, I'm sure Kompak will make things right.
CONVERSE
The fact that some of you found fingerprints on your records is really kind of shocking -- I have never heard of such poor quality control in my nearly 30 years of record collecting. I received my box yesterday and it looks great, just like a new package should. For those of you complaining about rumpled inner sleeves, that is one of the most common occurrences ever when it comes to record collecting, so you need to get over that -- it happens; always has, always will. I must agree with what people say about the book, though. It really is just a poor quality attempt at art with the rendered images looking like a scan job gone awry. Maybe this was the intention? Either way, it looks bad. Overall, these records are pressed well and play very clean. Unless you have fingerprints which I still can't believe!
Virtual
CDs are far from archival. As an archivist, it's well known in my profession that digital media is actually harder to preserve, with most CDs having a shelf life of around 15-25 years. Files require constant migration and hard disks are also hard to maintain.
net rider
Thanks for having some sense about the vinyl hype. Long live the CD, and digital too. It continues to irk me that a lot of reissues are being done vinyl-only instead of tried and tested archival formats (i.e. digital-based).
Mananara
Oh man, that sucks. So the inner sleeves you got are in bad shape, huh?
GYBYXOH
Yeah, I certainly agree that new vinyl pressings tend to cut a lot of corners. Some random things I've started noticing are perforated notch marks on jackets, extremely shoddy plain inner sleeves that scuff records right from the get-go, and just overall bad pressings with marks and imperfections everywhere. With the vinyl boom of the past few years, inexperienced people start running these vinyl press machines and really have little experience with what they're doing. But the demand mixed with newer/younger buyers who don't know any differently accept the current standards, so there is no reason for pressing plants to improve their quality control. A shame.
Heraly
I've been only collecting for five years, mostly on newer pressings. The amount of botched pressings I get is too high sometimes. Fingerprints, non-fill issues, crackling, you name it. It really astounds me that some beat up record I own from the 1950s can sound better than a mint record sometimes!
Brightcaster
I feel fortunate that my box and vinyl arrived in wonderful shape and feel bad for those that had a different experience. No smudges or scratches or any issues at all with the vinyl itself, they all play perfectly quiet. I love that they chose to spread the 3 LP's over 6 sides. It sounds absolutely stunning.
Whilingudw
The records in my box were in perfect condition and sound fantastic in the 3xLP format. The box itself is understated, well-built, well designed and suits the GAS aesthetic well. My only quibble: I agree that the photography in the book is disappointing.
Damand
Bought direct from Kompakt. Just got mine on Friday and every disc of my Pop had some scuffing, and all had various finger prints, etc. Has anyone reached out to any of the distributors/Kompakt and gotten any response?
Danial
I have a paypal case open as all the records were not up to par. Sever scratches and unplayable. They are open to sending me a replacement but I just want to return the entire box set. Just bad QA.
Xtreem
Both the CDs and Vinyl sound amazing. In regards to the CDS: Every track sounds better with this boxset over the original CDS and the Nah Und Fern boxset except track 1 of Pop. The Nah Und Fern version of track 1 on Pop sounds better in my opinion. The booklet with the pictures is a waste of time i will say. Also i wish the vinyl had the coloured centre labels instead of black and white. But overall i am very happy.ALSO there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of my cds or vinyl, no finger marks, scratches etc.
Vinainl
same here with the quality control, all was in mint condition. and i agree, the booklet ist really a waste of space an ressources. i mean it looks so shitty and corny. why did they choose to put a comic ps filter on those pictures?
Brannylv
Various pieces of vinyl have very mild surface marks and/or fingerprints. Some of the sleeves slightly rumpled. One of the CDs has a minor vertical scratch on it, not sure yet if it affects playback yet. For $150 with shipping in a sealed container I expect mint condition. The condition isn't terrible, but seems like people at the pressing plant are a little careless. A download code for MP3 or lossless would have been appreciated as well.Like others have noted, the art book is rubbish. Who thought it was a good idea to run all the photos through the same shitty photoshop filter? Why are all the pages single sided? The photographs just look like a mess. They got it right with the gatefold sleeve of 'Nah Und Fern"...this is a big disappointment.Aside from all this, I'm at least thankful to have a physical copy of these albums, they were so hard to find for so long and this is really special music. I am not an audiophile but the records sound very good. A few of them had some very minor warpage, and one of them was so dirty I had to clean it first to get rid of audible noise.
Perius
Thanks! Personally i will pass tho, i already own 2 original mille plateaux cds + the Nah Und Fern box ....but hearing Pop (and the others but that is my favorite!) on vinyl & on your own home system, it's totally ambient porn - it might easily be one of the best ambient experiences ever. Generally speaking, finding records and cds marks/scuffs and scratches just out ouf the factory, is really something that i wouldn't be able to accept.
Orevise
Mine all came mint and sound great. The art book is pretty worthless... it has a bad photoshop filter on what might have been very pretty photography? Has anyone taken the time to figure out how the vinyl copies here compare to the originals/nah und fern?
JoJolar
How is it ironic? Or is this the Alanis Morissette usage of the word?
Saimath
The book is a pretentious joke. An ironic waste of paper.
Uranneavo
I'm guessing that these pressing issues are due to rushing to release it on time. I got a notification from Bleep last month saying that the release was delayed for a week (to early November) but then apparently it got released almost on time on Oct 31st. This happened before with a rushed David Bowie reissue earlier this year, also pressed by MPO. Still, what a shame.
Aver
I really doubt that those delays were related to the actual pressing of the records. Those kind of delays are usually really long, not just one week, maybe it was something related to the shipping, I would bet on that.
Gunos
I mean like this release was supposed to be delayed yet got released on time. That's adding an extra amount of rush which may have contributed to QC issues.Edit: I guess I gotta live with it haha
Zymbl
There isn't one a release nowadays that isn't rushed. Plants are under so much pressure that everything is done as fast as it can. I ordered my copy from Norman Records and didn't find any issue in both CDs and records, the pressing isn't outstanding but I would rate it as a 7 out of 10, some clicks and pops here and there but fortunately I didn't face the problems some folks are reporting.
Xangeo
I passed on this release at first, because I was low on money for the first few days after the release date. Within that period the cheapest copies for sale (kompakt homepage and some german webshops) sold out really fast. I also thought that the box would be available much longer at source. After reading so many comments it seems like playing Russian Roulette whether you'll receive a perfect copy or not (maybe they should rethink their pressing plant). I hope that Kompakt will repress the Gas vinyl releases separately someday, those records will sell anyway.
Ionzar
I got mine from Kompakt, same errors like already listed.
Gosar
My box and content are pristine, both the pressings and the packaging. Box has no dents; sleeves are flawless with no rips, cuts or unwanted folding. Most important, I played all ten vinyls, and they are flawless: no warps, no grubby fingerprints, no clicks or pops.I haven't played the CDs as I don't own a CD player, but they have no visible scratches either. So, good news for others: perfectly fine boxes do exist. I pre-ordered directly from Kompakt. One flaw, as has been pointed out already, are the inner sleeves: you do want to replace them with some high quality polyliners (e.g. MFSL or similar).
Doukasa
Same here. I bought my copy in the cologne Kompakt store. Everything flawless.
Gavikelv
Got 1 copy at the Rush Hour store in Amsterdam. No warped records, just a tiny scratch on 1 CD, which wasn't identical on others. Scratch didn't hurt much as the CD played perfectly fine. Sleeves are perfectly fine as well. Probably I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't had a moron that packed my box (except for the tiny scratch on the CD).Very happy with this early birthday present! EDIT : Everything seemed fine until I saw the last 2 pop records. 1 rip in an inner sleeve of proxy 4 cm, a fold on an inner sleeve and fingerprints on the vinyl. Close yet, so far away. Bummer... They probably have this 1 guy at the pressing plant that doesn't mind a valued product.
Vrion
I've had two copies arrive. All sides of every record is warped. Both have identical small scratches on 2 of the cd's. One set had distortion on one record side of Königsforst for around 1 minute. The other set has about 1 second of distortion in same area. One set had a record with a white non removable mark (didn't even bother playing this one), the other set had loads of scratches on one record (the only other new record I've received in this condition was The Field's Cupid Head, also from Kompakt). Kompakt need to re-evaluate their pressings. Shame on them!
TheSuspect
One of the best birthday presents i've made so far to myself. :)I'm just comparing the record to an old pressing, fortunately, i got an old Königsforst. As far as i can tell, the new pressing sounds a little bit louder at all, but this is a minor problem. The quality all over is pretty much the same as the old records. Like other people here, i miss some records in the set, but i think the printed part is at least a good excuse for the absence.Highly recommend, especialy for people who just discovered Gas, as its WAY cheaper than buying the old pressings.
Domarivip
One gripe about the boxset is that it didn't come in poly-lined sleeves but those glossy paper sleeves. It's already expensive so why not put some extra for additional protection (and preservation? - poly-lined sleeves = minimal scratches)Edit: does anyone have defective pressings? My Oktember CD was unplayable due to a deep scuff and most of the record sides have non-fill issues (they produce ripping/shhh swoosh sounds on every revolution). F--- this, and whoever decided to use MPO to press this (otherwise great) boxset...Edit2: someone messaged me, also have the same problem + what seems to be careless handling of records in the pressing plant (fingerprints and ripped sleeves)

Where is the first Gas album? Where is Modern? Is Konigsforst Vinyl A1 (an exclusive track and the very best Gas track by far) still missing? Why is this not an exhaustive box set which is what everyone wants? Edit: This is not an insignificant purchase for most, considering its cost. Hence my questions. No I am not trying to come across negative, but people here are quick to assume so. If I want a Gas box set (actually I have the original CDs so I don't care personally), I would want everything to be in there.

Thank you that was a lot more helpful than Magiceye's unnecessary offensive (and cheap) response.

Königsforst 1 is (as far as I can hear) the old Oktember-A, that's why he put Tal 90 on this new Oktember A-side. I wish he included the great "Oktav" anywhere here (a compilation-exclusive track on Modulation & Transformation 4). One release is missing (besides Gas debut and modern of course - it's conceptually absolutely legit): It's the album he made for raster/noton which is only available on CD yet. In this time he already used this forest-concept, so it would have been a nice addition. All in all the sound is absolutely awesome. The album covers have an embossed "GAS logo" (looks great). There is just one downside: The labels are all b/w. :(

Why do you sound like such a massive baby? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't received my copy yet, but judging from the tracklist (8 tracks) it seems that Voigt included both vinyl-only tracks.
