Album

Mazeltov, Mis Amigos is a real oddity in the history of both Latin jazz and Jewish music. Though the LP was billed to Juan Calle and His Latin Lantzmen, in truth that was a pseudonym for a group of heavyweight talents including Ray Barretto, Charlie Palmieri, Clark Terry, Doc Cheatham, and Willie Rodriguez. As the album title intimated, the idea was to put Jewish standards to Latin jazz arrangements. Neither Juan nor his Latin Lantzmen were actually Lantzmen, and only some were actually Latin. Juan was John Cali, an Italian-American banjo picker and radio veteran best known for his work with the Vincent Lopez Orchestra and a string of solo banjo outings. His Latin Lantzmen included some of the biggest names in 50s and 60s Latin music conguero Ray Barretto, timbales guru Wilie Rodriguez, pianist Charlie Palmier playing alongside African-American jazz greats Clark Terry, Doc Cheatham, Lou Oles, and Wendell Marshall. The album ends very nicely with Juan Calle & His Latin Lantzmen performing Bel Mir Bist du Shein to that terrific merengue beat . Die Greene Koseene. Juan Calle and his Latin Lantzmen. The album Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos dates from a time in the late 1940s through the mid-'60s when Latin music was hugely popular in this country's Jewish community. Albums blending the two cultures sold millions of copies. One of them, which put Jewish classics to a Latin beat, has just been reissued - and is being re-created in concert at New York's Lincoln Center. Hear The Music

Thus, the album included the most famous Jewish standard of all, Havah Nagilah, as a cha-cha-cha, and others as mambos, merengues, and sambas. As is the case with many an ambitious fusion, the product wasn't as intriguing as the formula. The signature song of Latin musics greatest melodramatist, Querida finds Juan Gabriel at his most extra: Vulnerable yet masculine, flamboyant but crude. Juanga masterfully melds Sinatra-style orchestral pop with a Beatles-approved backbeat into a fiery lament of desperation. Repeated cries of dime cuándo tú vas a volver tell me when youll return add a level of paranoia to the saga of this lovestruck Romeo in a transcendent finale. Categorized as Mexicos answer to Prince, Elvis, and even Elton John, one spin of Querida shows that Juan Gabriel was in a class all his own
