Did a direct a/b comparison between this copy, and the 2009 standard copy. While this copy did sound better (less muddy, more punch to the drums, vocals a bit clearer), it wasn't a night and day difference. This being one of my favorite albums ever, I'm happy to own this version (especially for the more robust packaging), but for casual fans, the cheaper version will do you just fine.Having said that, I'm in love with this version and am so thankful they did it. One of the best albums of the past 20 years, and definitely Phoenix's best. Every song is just so good. Only complaint with the packaging is instead of lyrics in the booklet, I would have preferred the band writing information on the tracks (song meaning, how the idea started, etc).
This thing thumps. Usually modern synth bands don’t need a vinyl remaster or any vinyl to make a difference to me. This blows my ignorant theory away. Fantastic. Packaging stellar. Would prefer the OG pink cover to the reflective but the licorice sounds amazing and that’s the most important thing.
This just sounds amazing! This has to be the definitive pressing. I don't see how it could be topped.Looks to be sold out now on VMP
I really wanted to buy this until I saw GZ Vinyl on the credits. Shame.
GZ are pretty good now. They've really upped their game in the last few years.
Oh man, this record got a lot of pops even after a wet clean.
Great album from start to finish. My copy had a significant skip during the first track, but I was able to clear the debris without doing any damage using a toothpick. Once that was done, there were no more issues. Just a great record.
This record plays like a dream, absolutely perfect. No surface noise at all. Music sounds great and pressing is AAA for sure.
All I can say is wow. Well, I can say more, but this AAA pressing is like hearing "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" for the first time again. I have always loved this album, the perfect expression of alt-pop, and this version is so much warmer than any digital version I have heard. Plus the separation of instruments is much more pronounced and soundstage is wider. This is the third Vinyl Me Please all-analog pressing they have shipped me, and they are all stellar ... no pops or surface noise.
It sounds so clear and present and lively. Great pressing!
Everything about it is absolutely perfect. Another winner from Vinyl Me Please.
Agreed, this recording blew me away and I wasn't even that excited for it...but there's definitely something about the quality that's superb
I was a bit skeptical of this record having a true "analog master" as I assumed it was largely constructed in a DAW like a lot of indie at the time. Based on the first few seconds of hearing the drums I quickly realized I was wrong. The album's producer Zdar is a bit of an analog nut, and this LP is clearly sourced from a less limited, and more open sounding master. This makes for a great alternative listening experience, more traditionally hi-fi and dynamic of a classic indie record. My copy is free of non-fill and surface noise, and largely flat. Setup: SL-1700 / ATVM95ML / MoFi StudioPhono / SX-750 / ADS 500
Yes, sad loss, excellent artist, producer and engineer. I dug up an article on the album's production, it was recorded in Pro Tools, then mixed to a final two-track analog master, which would be the source for this and the digital master.
R.I.P. Zdar! He died today. What a loss. :(
side A has horrible surface noise.everything else sounds pretty swell however.
I noticed this as well in the first two tracks. I'm going to give it a wet clean to see if that takes care of it.
Vinyl Me, Please has just announced a new pressing for June 2019 as part of their Essentials Series. The pre-order notes says it has been remastered from the original tapes, so I’m hopeful for a long overdue quality pressing of this... because the album has never been pressed very well in the past, as noted below.
I've been wishing for a good pressing of this as well, so I'm really hoping VMP does a good job. In the article about the upcoming release, they actually refer to it as an "all analog pressing."https://www.vinylmeplease.com/magazine/phoenix-wolfgang-vinyl/
Picked this up new Side A is like a dream Side B is covered in surface noise

Just popped this dude in after a cleaning, wow does it have quite a lot of pops. I'm just assuming Glassnote doesn't care about pressing records properly do they
energy breath
Phoenix blew up with their fourth album, WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX, a joyous blast of pop rock from start to finish. This is perfect music for summer drives, for late nights on the beach, or any place where you just want a zap of energy. The opener, "Lisztomania," not an ode to the composer, but instead a brisk jumpy track, and the mood continues onto "1901." "Fences" has some hints of disco, and the two part "Love Like a Sunset" starts off with purely electronic twinkling before shifting into a slow rock build. But "Lasso" blasts back into the energy, and "Countdown" plays with the loud-soft duality to great effect. A tinge of romance creeps into "Girlfriend," and "Armistice" closes the album on a jangling, pleasing note. Sure to get your feet tapping and your mouth smiling.
Full of pleasantly lucid, jangly pop music that's short, sweet, and to the point. Puts a smile on your face with every song.
Impala Frozen
This album is going to be for Rock what The 'ninth of Beethoven' for classical music was,-if radio stations would play it some more- so Phoenix has chosen a very good title. An outstanding album.
