Dummy is the debut studio album by English electronic band Portishead, released on 22 August 1994 by Go Beat Records. The album received critical acclaim and won the 1995 Mercury Music Prize. It reached 2 on the UK Album Chart and 79 on the Billboard 200 chart, going gold in 1997. Building on the promise of their earlier EP-Numb-it helped to cement the reputation of Bristol as the capital of Trip hop, a nascent genre which was then often referred to simply as the Bristol sound. The cover is a still of Gibbons from the short film that the band created-To Kill a Dead Man-which originally got them signed du. Portisheads 1994 full-length debut Dummy received critical acclaim, winning the 1995 Mercury Music Prize. Although it achieved only modest chart success overseas, it peaked at number 2 on the UK Album Chart, and saw two of its three singles reach number 13. The album was certified gold in 1997 and has sold two million copies in Europe. The album was certified double platinum in the UK in 1996, for sales exceeding 600,000 copies. It had sold 825,000 copies in the United. Discover all of this album's music connections, watch videos, listen to music, discuss and 1994 11 Songs. Combining languid breakbeats and haunting synths, the album is a downtempo spy novel, evoking dark alleys, loaded glances, and sinister undercurrents. Beth Gibbons sings like a caged bird, resilient yet full of sorrow, and partner-in-crime Geoff Barrow builds beats like a cinematographer composes a frame, deftly balancing light and shadow. They invented their own kind of virtuosity, one that encompassed musicianship, technology, and aura. Savor the irony in the title of Portisheads debut album. The album may suggest coziness, sonic swaddling, the gentle soundtrack to a ravers comedown-and in 1994, ravers were plenty familiar with pacifiers. But Dummy doesnt coddle, it unsettles. It tastes not like warm milk but coppery and bitter, like blood. Despite its two-plus decades spent soundtracking makeout sessions, it cradles a terrible loneliness in its heart

Where is the photo of the rear to allow this to be discriminated from others...

There's no point having a long list of #contributors' if none of you Contribute photographs of this release to enable buyers to distinguish it form others, neh?
RuTGamer
Is this reissue worth buying? Is it better than the original pressing?
Erienan
holding off buying this in case they release a version (on vinyl) with it's a fire ~ probably won't happen but it's my favourite track on the album ~ i guess the reason it was left off is that the sound would be compromised with 6 tracks on one side?
ᴜɴɪᴄᴏʀɴ
Have you seen one available lately because I am interested. Last one here was April 2019.
Nuadazius
Just bought this version from a German online store. Interestingly, they actually indicated a release date of 24.7.2001 on the page of this specific pressing. Could that mean it’s actually this one?https://www.discogs.com/Portishead-Dummy/release/12171420There’s not enough info on the page of the 2001 version to confirm, though.
Invissibale
What can i say that's not already been said. One of the best albums of all time. Perfect in almost any way. Beth's amazing vocals really play into the dark atmosphere of the album.Favourite track: Strangers
Melipra
My press is flat and heavy, and side A sounds pretty good but there is an awful amount of static on side B. Makes it close to unlistenable.
huckman
A lot of pops and crackles, not a good press at all. but a great album.
Skillet
Is Dummy one of the finest albums modern music has to offer? Yes. Full stop. The pressing is adequate.
Kanrad
Well, its 1966 source certainly meets that description -- have a listen to Jack Trombey's 'Mystery Project' and you'll find out where Portishead lifted their sound from Wholesale.
TheFresh
My only fear that prevents me from buying this one came after I saw GZ Vinyl in the credits, I think I'll pass
WinDImmortaL
I bought the album from Amazon, it was one of those 10€ records you find most of the year, usually cheap pressings, from recent years...Every info from pictures to runouts - also the hand etching - is the same on my copy, it also is a 180g LP, but this edition came out in 2003 according to Discogs. I highly doubt Amazon had mint copies of a vinyl record that came out in 2003. I might be wrong, but this seems quite incredible to me.Anyone aware of another pressing virtually equivalent to this one that came out after ? Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks !
Chuynopana
This is a simply stunning and very moving collection of songs. Nice and loud.
GEL
Can confirm that it sounds fantastic. Worth buying. Ten words.
MisterMax
this is the only vinyl pressing to have 'It's A Fire', whether original or repress.
Ubranzac
my favourite track from the album very disappointed that it isn't on the vinyl versions
Liarienen
I just bought a copy of a different pressing and listened to it a few times before I realized the song was missing! It's one of my favorites, too; I might have to seek out a copy of this pressing...
Wyameluna
Do we know that all copies of that pressing have it or just some ?
Mayno
Really lovely pressing - sounds great from start to finish.
Gerceytone
I owned this, but sold it for about £90. It isn't worth it. Sound is fine, and it is blue, but not that blue....
Samulkis
I sold it to make a 500% profit. I just don’t think the blue vinyl was that nice. So anybody buying this, I would say don't bother.
Paxondano
So you sold it because it isn't that blue ? LMFAO.Anyway. Good sounding and limited, so the price.
Debeme
Thought this was over-static-y at first but after listening to the digital copies out there, seems there's quite a bit of crackle in those versions too. Maybe I'm just hearing the original production.
X-MEN
Re: above comment, turns out I have the 27 Oct 2003 pressing, after looking at the matrix codes.

Very nice release. Nice thick flat black-background vinyl; nice touches on the packaging w/ gloss varnish over the images. Sound wise I'd be curious to do an A/B comparison against the CD on mine (need a CD first). It all sounds great, some tracks sounding more great than others. Side B overall seems to sound better to me (much fuller bass), for whatever reason. Was a tad let down on Side A. Anyone else observe this?

Is there a certain way to recognize a sealed (or even unsealed) copy of the first pressing from the following ones?CheersBoris
Olma
This pressing sounds excellent to my ears. Deep bass tones and crisp highs. Lots of presence on all tracks. 5/5 for sound quality. My copy was pressed on center, so there's no discernible wow. Unfortunately, there is some slight warping, but that hasn't affected playback.
Yla
Sounds amazing! Clean flat pressing. Dynamic with a nice sound stage. It has a full, warm and rich sound. This one was done right!
Abywis
Anyone possesses a vinyl version with "It's a fire" on it? I've read about the greece version, but no confirmation until now.
Rose Of Winds
Can anyone told something about this pressing? How good is it? What better - 94 original UK or this?
Malodor
This one sounds worse than this. I think the original is even better.https://www.discogs.com/Portishead-Dummy/release/10147986

Anyone know the difference between this release and the 2008 release by the outer sleeve alone?
Damdyagab
It's unreal this much music fit on a single platter. This is the quintessential 90's Downtempo record. Special attention to "STRANGERS" side A which is very underrated. GO BUY IT! The production is A+++ on this and gladly holds its own against any Massive Attack album from the same era. The value has held at $30 CAD (New)! Almost any pressing of this will be clean out of a new sleeve.
Sharpbinder
Is there any way to confirm the year of this pressing?I thought about asking the label, but they are no longer doing business.
Ynneig
I have the black label release of this pressing, evidently there are two, the other with white colored labels. Quality pressing, very dynamic and rich sounding.
Buzalas
Pretty clean, nice pressing. It's a GZ Media if anyone is curious.
Gavirgas
Thanks, that this is GZ is just the detail needed (for non-purchase)
Dreladred
Agree with KnightDG. It's a alternate pressing from 2007. The 2014 version was an anniversary edition with the sleeve used as the interior artwork of the gatefold cover.
Xar
So I just got this from Amazon Germany, it was sealed/brand new? Having a hard time believing they had a brand new, sealed copy from '94 but all the numbers/runouts match.
Voodoozragore
It's still what you're getting ordering from Amazon in 2019 :)
Scoreboard Bleeding
I received the same copy via ebay, new and still sealed. They must keep finding boxes of these in the back of a warehouse or something. Sounds great BTW
Vishura
It´s the same with the copy i received from Amazon today.
Уou ll never walk alone
are there any vinyl releases that contain the track "it's a fire"?
Moswyn
ssk13 are there any vinyl releases that contain the track "it's a fire"? I know the Greece original release from 1994 has it.
Black_Hawk_Down
I do not believe so, I honestly don't think they'd be able to squeeze it in.
Narder
I'm afraid not , "It's a fire" is such a gem , unbelievable , yet nowhere on vinyl :-(
Lo◘Ve
I'd recommend giving it a decent cleaning before enjoying but it sounds lovely. Lush. Treat yourself and pick up a copy.
Anicasalar
A beautiful issue-- the best I've seen and heard and I have three versions '08UK, '14UK non gatefold, and this. I wish the vinyl were a little quieter, but compared to the previous two this one is best behaved overall-- and the mastering seems better-- more balanced without losing the deep liquid bottom-end that is part of this album's charm. Or maybe I've got my cartridge dialed in a little better these last few weeks... I don't know, but this issue sounds pretty pretty pretty damn good.
Roram
Very nice edition, neat and clean pressing. Perfect kind of music to be played from a vinyl :)
Gholbirius
'roads' will echo through eternity in the same way that 'unfinished symphony' does,or at least it certainly should.borne of the same era and general 'trip hop' fraternity.my only regret is that I was ever so slightly too young to appreciate it at the time.i was generally caught up in hard dance music,so much of which,in retrospect, was entirely disposable when compared to this.at least I can listen to it over 20 years later and shed a tear.thankyou Portishead. X

The album speaks for itself. And the Vinyl release is superb. The fact that this album is a single disc release, and still sounds this good is almost unbelievable. All respect to Portishead and also the engineers that squeezed 5 tracks on a single side of the vinyl and got this level of quality. Definitely one of the records that can be enjoyed on many levels. This is a work of professionals.
Moronydit
Agreed , the sound is amazing , as it should be . Most remarkable is the second album , where 29+ minutes are crammed into a side b and the sound is still amazing , the only thing is that you need a great tracker n' tracer of a cartridge to dig the info out of the grooves (y)

I wonder if there were some issues with this pressing. My first copy had some skipping through "Numb." I returned it for another copy, thinking it was just a defective copy. My replacement copy, though, has the same skipping issue
Shadowredeemer
Yes, same issues here. Almost threw it away, but after a good cleaning with record cleaning fluid it's gone. I think it's just dirt in the grooves.
Flocton
Yes, I got the same skipping issues on Numb, the record looks very clean. A bit annoying.
Nirn
I think it's just a quality control issue. Mine doesn't have a problem with skipping, but the 1st time I took it out it had a shit ton of light scratches on one side of the record all going in the same direction like it had been dragged across sandpaper or something. I bought it months before I finally got another turntable and I bought it in another city I was visiting so returning wasn't really an option. The upside is the crackling from the scratches is pretty light and it almost sounds like it was recorded to sound like that. It actually fits the music pretty well. But, I'm still about to get another copy of it. I've actually read a lot of complaints over the years about 180g vinyls. I have another double lp that I had for quite awhile before I got my turntable and one of the lps has a huge warp in it. It doesn't effect the sound any, but its maddening to watch the tone arm going up and down. I saw one person say that the old record presses they're using weren't made to press records that thick and that that's part of why there's so many problems with the 180s. No idea if that's true, but I have noticed that the quality control for records these days is pretty shoddy. At least with my personal experience,.
Granijurus
Well, mine is OK, probably not entire batch is affected.
Thohelm
My brandnew sealed copy, which I bought from my local record store, has skipping errors too. But the funny thing is that the skipping on the intro of "Biscuit" creates a perfect loop :D.Pity about the pressing anyway.
cyrexoff
One of the best sounding records in my collection. I'm sure it does the original issues justice and more. Very bass heavy, perfect for the beats. The gatefold is beautifully printed too, with a nice anti-static sleeve. Excellent issue
Kazimi
This is one of the best pressed sounding vinyl I have ever owned, its a great album but this press has so much warmth and feeling to it.
Goldendragon
Mine is a tip-on style jacket, same case/seal. Mine also has a small "made in england" sticker on said case.
Anararius
Hey- is this a gatefold sleeve by chance? Did yours have a plastic case with a flap and sticker on both sides? Thanks!
Ueledavi
Very good sounding reissue, low base noise floor of the record....
Der Bat
One of the best and quite original trip-hop albums. Definitely worth having if you're into this great genre. Everything But the Girl comes close to this. Both albums have alot of similarities.
Tcaruieb
This album is archetypal of trip-hop. With out a question one of my favourite albums that I have ever had the pleasure to drop a needle on.
Jake
US version which contains extra track "It's A Fire", not available on other releases.
Adoranin
Great LP, essential 90s, surprised that it's not worth more already
Awene
Anyone have the deadwax/runoff matrices? If so, could you update? Thanks!
Winail
Blue vinyl limited to 1000 copies.
Nnulam
I've been listening to this album for 2-3 years at least 2 times a day somewhere around middle 90s, one of those 10 which I'd take to desert island. When I finally had an opportunity to hear it life in 2012, it just ensured me that the turntablist and scratch sound is really unseparable in this lp like beth gibons' voice...if I happens that I will start loosing my memory at the age of 70 I think this records will help me out with this unevitable problem:) 5/5
Granirad
Does this version sound any better than the original vinyl release?
saafari
best trip-hop album ever ! and one of tha best album ever !

Somewhere, up there, the God Of Music has a very large wooden bench covered in all his notes, paperwork and things like Mercury Music Prize replicas. Upon this bench, from time to time over the decades, he has occasionally made a mark. A mark to remind himself of the moments when a recording arrived that made him get off his celestial bike and go back for another listen. If you were to be able to see this mark you'd see it isn't just a simple cut that has been made. There's a kind of patina around it. Little tiny scratches, emanating from it like the mysterious crisscross patterns on the plains of Nazca. If, like Alice, you were able to shrink yourself down real small, then you could explore them. Some you'd have to hop over. Now and then you might trip. Like a dummy, you might just have to sit there in awe at the wonderment and complexity of it all. A benchmark that's well worth buying a ticket and taking a trip to...
ZloyGenii
TRUTH! Side B track 1 - Is just so creamy.
Flathan
Your review totally works for me. :)

Despite its sheer brilliance, 'Dummy' is more of a necessary debut which sounds a bit calculated. Which is mostly due to its predominantly slow pace - although the 'noir' effect in the sound is all Portishead's signing. At the time, Tricky and Massive Attack largely dominated and informed the trip-hop forum (personally I always hated the 'trip-hop' tag), including this timeless classic. From the point where she might be a female Thom Yorke, weeping out of depression, Beth Gibbons' is actually one the most unique voices in the music business. White singers sing with a passion all of their own, however, it is quite rare to have a talent of a black singer - which Gibbons makes quite a match (especially in the group's most astonishing (or popular) moment of 'Glory Box' - which sadly seems to have one of the most stupid fade outs to a song). 'Dummy' is a deserved act of cool but the group's next two albums are far more diverse and dynamic, despite the morbid aspects or their ever-present monotony.
Iphonedivorced
Dark beautiful haunting trip hop of the very highest order. Beth Gibbon's voice is unbelievably unique & beautiful. The touch of melancholy in her vocals & her voice sometimes at breaking point, coupled with Andy Smith's superb beats make for a stunning & compelling combination. One of the greatest dance/electronic albums ever and probably of any genre.
Jeyn
perfect. a trippy dark female voice overcome with emotional lyrics over hypnotizing beats. its no mistake why portishead as popular as they are. it hasn't escaped my cd player for years.
Delan
"trip-hop"? "downtempo"? although it is a dark record, between beth gibbons' tortured voice, geoff barrows' beats, scratches and samples, and adrian utleys' jazzy guitar: this album is pure sex. don't believe me? try it.
