Album

The well-loved, fun Chicago club Lounge Ax ran into big legal bills fighting the city and a nasty neighbor trying - and fortunately failing - to close it. Thus, the club and classy Touch & Go put together this CD to help pay the lawyers, asking the many renowned underground touring acts that play there to contribute. Regrettably, none of the bands are recorded live at the smokin' club, but this is still a strong array of indie-minded rock. Barcode Text: 0 36172 08302 2. Barcode Scanned: 036172083022. The Lounge Ax was a music venue in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, located across the street from Wax Trax. It was an important venue for live rock music, especially indie rock. In 1996, Touch & Go Records released a compilation album to benefit the club, titled The Lounge Ax Defense & Relocation Compact Disc, featuring artists such as Guided by Voices, The Jesus Lizard, Sebadoh, Tortoise, The Coctails and Yo La Tengo. Lounge Ax was featured prominently in the Chicago-based movie High Fidelity, released in 2000. Those Pearls. The members have roots in Chicago's fertile music scene, playing in various indie rock and punk groups. Struggling Chicago alternative club Lounge Ax asked its regular guests to contribute previously unreleased tracks for this album, Lounge Ax Defense and Relocation CD. The result is a good introduction to a wide range of bands, but very little of it represents the impressive lineup at their best. The Jesus Lizard, Rachels, and Bad Livers provide the highlights, but efforts from Guided by Voices, Mekons, and Archers of Loaf disappoint. The Lounge Ax Defense & Relocation Compact Disc: 14. THIS COMPILATION WAS put together in 1996 to raise money for Lounge Ax, the venerable Chicago club whose livelihood was threatened by some yuppie neighbors who were whining about the noise coming from the club as well as people parking in the alley. Happily, the danger has passed, and Lounge Ax and this great disc live on. This is perhaps the best-sequenced album I've ever heard -- the kind of quality flow I strive for with my mix tapes. It kicks off with the naked aggression of Jesus Lizard, Shellac and Sebadoh, then slows down with some edgy June of 44, a bizarre vibes-and-fuzzbox Coctails instrumental and pulsing Guided by Voices lo-fi. Then the album moves on to an Archers of Loaf surf instrumental, gets derailed temporarily with two out-of-place tracks (the Bad Livers, and Yo La Tengo doing some unlistenable no-wave noise), but recovers nicely with the Mekons relating a Lounge Ax folk tale. Then, after Superchunk and Seam weigh in with typically sterling efforts, things mellow out dramatically with the post-rock quietude of Tortoise and the Rachel's. It is odd, however, that former Ax mainstays Uncle Tupelo are nowhere to be found, given how many times they played there over the years, as well as the fact that Jeff Tweedy is married to one of the club's owners. But that's just quibbling -- the music here is mostly wonderful. And you absolutely must see the liner art, which includes priceless snapshots of indie rock luminaries (Lou Barlow, Mac McCaughan, Jon Langford, etc.) taken in Lounge Ax's photo booth.
