East meets West ****
Ein Merkmal der späten "Tauwetter"-Periode in der Tschechoslowakei vor dem August 1968 war die kulturelle Offenheit, die die kommunistische Führung zuließ. So etablierte sich in den 1960er Jahren ein international bald sehr beachtetes Jazz-Festival in Prag. Zur vierten Auflage im Oktober 1967 waren Jazzgrößen aus vielen Teilen der westlichen und östlichen Welt eingeladen, sodass die Bezeichnung "East Meets West", den ein Billboard-Magazin-Artikel zu diesem Festival formuliert hat, sehr angebracht erscheint.
Als Dokumentation ist seinerzeit eine LP mit sieben Aufnahmen von sechs Auftritten erschienen. Angesichts der Fülle der Konzerte während dieses Festivals ist das eine recht schmale Quelle, aber immerhin bietet die Platte einen tollen akustischen Eindruck der Festivalmusik sowie einen informativen Text des Musikjournalisten Stanislav Titzl (ins Englische übersetzt auf der internationalen Edition der LP), der auch die Stückeauswahl besorgt hat.
Der Münchner Max Greger wird mit seinem damals 16-köpfigen Orchester gleich mit zwei Stücken auf der Platte verewigt. Greger, der damals schon viel für das deutsche Fernsehen spielte und auf dem Weg zum Easy-Swing-Schlager-Bandleader war, zeigt mit zwei Stücken, dass er es auch fetzig und bissig ("Perdido") bzw. ziemlich heavy swingend ("Green Tree") kann - ganz großer Big-Band-Jazz! Der Klassiker "Stompin' At The Savoy" von 1933 wird von Mark Murphy, einem amerikanischen Jazz-Sänger, der mit seinem Trio nach Prag gereist war, interpretiert. Meine Lieblings-Jazzvariante ist solcher Vokaljazz nicht unbedingt. Den seit jeher famosen skandinavischen Jazz repräsentierte auf dem Festival der damals sehr junge dänische Trompeter Palle Mikkelborg mit seinem Quintett (u.a. mit dem Schweden Bernt Rosengren am Tenorsax). Die Nummer "Gingerbread Boy" ist ein schönes, aber nicht unbedingt überragendes Exempel der skandinavischen Spielart.
Auf der zweiten Plattenseite hören wir zwei Kostproben von osteuropäischem Jazz der späten 1960er Jahre. Wenig überzeugend klingt für mich das ausgewählte Stück "Lil' Darlin'" der polnischen Vokalgruppe "Novi". Recht eintöniges "Du-bi-du" in Dauerschleife, kombiniert mit einer lauen Rhythmusgruppe - fertig ist der Langweiler der Platte. Ganz anders dagegen und wohl das Highlight des Albums ist eine Eigenkomposition des sowjetischen Saxophonisten Alexei Zubov, dessen "RT Quintett" für Titzl die beeindruckendste der vier aus der UdSSR nach Prag angereisten Gruppen darstellte. Der moll-lastige, treibende, kräftige "Old Novgorod Song" stellt dies mit seinem voluminösen Saxophon-/Posaunensound unter Beweis. Eine wirklich starke Nummer! Leider einen Missgriff tat Titzl mit der Auswahl des Stücks des Charles Lloyd Quartetts, das am 22. Oktober seinen Auftritt in der Lucerna Hall in Prag hatte. "Island Blues" ist vornehmlich geprägt von einem nicht immer harmonischen Dialog zwischen Charles Lloyd am Tenor- und Keith Jarrett am Sopransaxophon. Obwohl er in dieser an sich ziemlich innovativen Gruppe häufiger zum Sopransaxophon griff, wäre eine Kostprobe des superben Klavierspiels des damals 22-jährigen Jarrett sicherlich die bessere Auswahl gewesen. Es gibt einen kurzen Dokumentarfilm über dieses Festival, das Jarrett beim Auftritt mit Charles Lloyd zeigt: Ein Irrwisch am Petrof-Flügel, unglaubliche Verrenkungen zeigend und dabei ein atemberaubendes Solo spielend. Titzl hatte schon recht damals in seinen Liner Notes, Jarrett als einen "outstanding musician of the young American generation" zu bezeichnen.
Insgesamt ist das Album "4th International Jazz Festival Praha '67" nicht nur als historisches Dokument wertvoll, sondern auch, vor allem wegen Max Greger und Alexei Zubov, eine tolle Jazzplatte. Vier Sterne!
